5 Ways to Reduce Stress Over the Festive Period

5 Ways to Reduce Stress Over the Festive Period.

Christmas is often considered the most wonderful time of the year, but it’s no always so for everyone. Add in shopping, cooking, and navigating family dynamics, it can quickly become one of the most stressful times of the year, too. The pressure to be perfect, keep up with all the festivities, and manage the usual demands of life can take a toll on your skin, your mind, and your overall well-being.

As someone who believes in aging naturally and holistically, I understand that stress can wreak havoc on your skin. It can cause flare-ups, fine lines to appear more pronounced, and leave your complexion looking dull. That’s why I’ve put together five simple ways to reduce stress this festive season, so you can enjoy Christmas with a glowing, calm mindset and skin that radiates health.

1. Prioritise Self-Care with a Relaxing Skincare Routine

When stress hits, it’s easy to skip your skincare routine. But taking just 10-15 minutes each day to pamper yourself can work wonders for both your mind and your skin. Opt for soothing, hydrating treatments like gentle exfoliators (enzymes are good), calming face masks, or oils that promote relaxation (think lavender or chamomile).

Consider treating yourself to a nourishing facial massage as part of your routine. Not only will this help relieve tension in your face and jaw (which tends to hold stress), but it will also improve circulation, leaving your skin looking fresh and glowing. A bit of self-care every day can be a powerful antidote to the stress of the season. If you’re looking to improve ageing gua – sha massagers can be great for lifting and toning as well as tension relief.

2. Practice Mindful Breathing and Meditation

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, taking a moment to pause and breathe deeply can instantly help bring your stress levels down. Try practicing mindful breathing or a quick meditation to help quiet your mind. Simple deep-breathing exercises – like inhaling deeply for a count of four, holding for four, and exhaling for four – can promote relaxation and focus.

Even just five minutes of meditation each day can work wonders, helping you feel grounded and centered throughout the holiday hustle. You’ll find that, as you take time for yourself, your skin will thank you, too, as stress hormones like cortisol are reduced.

3. Maintain Healthy Eating Habits

Overindulging at Christmas will happen at some point, but just be mindful that too much sugar, alcohol, and caffeine can lead to inflammation, breakouts, and even mood swings. Instead of depriving yourself, try to balance indulgent meals with nourishing, skin-friendly foods that will help reduce stress.

Incorporate plenty of antioxidants into your diet (like berries, dark leafy greens, and nuts), omega-3s (found in salmon and chia seeds), and hydration (make sure to drink plenty of water). These foods help keep your skin healthy, boost your mood, and maintain your energy levels, so you can enjoy the festive season feeling your best.

4. Get Moving with Gentle Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to relieve stress, but it doesn’t have to mean hitting the gym for an intense workout. Gentle exercises, such as yoga or walking in nature (my favourite), can help reduce stress without overwhelming your body. Yoga, in particular, is a great way to focus on your breath, stretch out any tension, and restore balance to your body and mind.

As you incorporate movement into your routine, you’ll find that your mood improves, your skin becomes more radiant, and Christmas starts to feel more manageable.

5. Set Boundaries and Learn to Say No

Christmas can often feel like it’s full of obligations—work parties, family gatherings, last-minute shopping—and the stress of trying to do it all can quickly pile up. Learning to set boundaries and say no when you’re feeling overwhelmed is essential for your mental and physical well-being.

I get it can be hard to say no, I can be the worlds worst. But remind yourself okay to say no to certain events or activities if they aren’t serving you or if you simply need time to recharge. Taking breaks, delegating tasks, and managing expectations will help you keep the joy and magic of the season without burning out.

Remember …..

Be kind to yourself, Christmas is not the be all end end all. You or the day doesn’t have to be perfect and above all put yourself first, as you can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself first!

Wishing you a stress-free, joyful Christmas!
