How do you get rid of a ‘Mummy Tummy’

If you haven’t heard the term before, a ‘Mummy Tummy’ is an area of soft, wobbly flesh around your middle, that often first appears when a woman’s body is returning to normal after childbirth.

I’ve spoken before about my own Mum Tum. After giving birth to my two boys and gaining weight during pregnancy, I lost elasticity in the skin on my tummy. This led to me losing a lot of self-confidence and any hope of wearing a bikini again.

Much as we love our babies, there aren’t many of us who love our Mum Tums. For some of us, we might never be able to get back to our pre-pregnancy shape, but there are many things we can do to improve our tummies and help us feel much better about our bikini bodies!

Over the years I have carried out a lot of research into skin elasticity and treatments that can improve it. I decided to experiment on myself and see what improvements could be achieved.

Here’s what I tried:

1.Collagen supplements

Collagen is a protein in the skin which supports the overall structure. Like other proteins in the body, it is in constant use and needs to be replaced. Taking a collagen supplement has been shown to increase the body’s collagen production, and therefore improve your skin’s quality and appearance.

2.Radio Frequency

Radio frequency treatments help to build collagen from the outside in, by heating up the skin cells. The treatment creates a thermal disruption within the skin which encourages it to heal itself and start to create more collagen. This has a firming and lifting effect.

3.Microneedling

Microneedling is a procedure that uses small needles to prick the skin. This pricking action creates a natural healing response, which generates collagen and skin tissue. This treatment can be particularly effective on stretch marks, so I added it to target the skin on my tummy that was a bit ‘crinkly’. Microneedling works well when done in conjunction with Radio Frequency.

4.Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is a technique that uses very fine needles to deliver a series of injections into the middle layer (mesoderm) of skin. The injections contain different combinations of vitamins, enzymes, hormones, and plant extracts to rejuvenate and tighten skin.

Mesotherapy treatments help with smoothing and hydration as they encourage the skin to grow new skin cells in the most healthy, effective way.

The Results

I am very happy with the results, and I feel much more confident to wear my bikini. My tummy feels less wobbly and has a smoother appearance. Do I look like I’ve had a tummy tuck? No, but that wasn’t what I was after (that approach was too invasive for me, personally).

If you want to make improvements and you don’t want to have surgery, you will see results with these treatments.

But one treatment alone is unlikely to deliver results that will increase your self-confidence. There is no quick fix – it’s going to take a bit of time.

For real improvements, I would recommend a programme of treatments put together specifically for you, combined with dietary tweaks, exercise, and treatments that you can apply to your skin.

Having tested the treatments on myself, I put together a plan to help my client, Mandy. She had lost a lot of elasticity in her skin following a period of weight loss. She was really concerned about her arms and didn’t feel comfortable to wear anything with short sleeves. Read Mandy’s story here
